Lehigh Regional Medical Center Holds Ribbon-Cutting To Commemorate Opening New Behavioral Health Unit

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at Lehigh Regional Medical Center (LRMC) on December 17, 2019 to celebrate the opening of the new Behavioral Health Unit.

Approximately 200 members of the Lehigh Acres community, local government officials and commission members, Saluscare representatives, and Gary Bell, CEO of the medical center attended to commemorate the brand new 35-bed in-patient facility.

After leading multiple tours of the unit Bell stated,

"This is a great day for the Lehigh Acres community and for the entire region. For many years, our area has been lacking behavioral health treatment facilities, especially in the area of inpatient treatment. The opening of this Behavioral Health Center is one more great step in transforming Lehigh Regional Medical Center from being The little hospital that could into the medical center that does as we continue to address the healthcare needs of a growing Southwest Florida population. We are very proud to bring state-of-art services to an underserved population in our area. However, this is just one more step in our plan to continue to build this hospital into a leader in healthcare services for the people of Lehigh Acres and for the entire region."

The Lehigh Regional Behavioral Health Unit, located inside the hospital, is designed specifically for adults ages 55 and older who are experiencing a wide range of emotional, social and behavioral issues that affect the healthy function of their daily lives. The state-of-the-art facility serves as a supportive, family-oriented site to encourage recovery and family involvement.

Mike Welch, community leader and President of the Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce also made a statement.

"Lehigh Regional is a valuable part of the Lehigh Acres community. There has been tremendous community support for this project and for this Medical Center in general. We were very excited when Prime Healthcare acquired Lehigh Regional in 2016 because of their great track record working with smaller hospitals such as ours. They have contributed greatly to helping our hospital flourish and become a part of our community of which we can be very proud."

Dr. Ralph Ryback, MD., Medical Director of the new facility also shared the excitement of others and stressed the need and importance of the Behavior Health Unit.

"This older age group is often not recognized as being a group that is in need of behavioral healthcare. Many people only think of behavioral healthcare as a need for a younger generation. Our target population of age 55+ faces a unique set of challenges as they move from one critical stage of life to another. Here, we are on the leading edge of meeting those needs with treatments and services that will help those having difficulty with these transitions."

Lehigh Regional Medical Center has been a fixture in the Lehigh Acres community since 1965, serving a growing population that has boomed over the past 10 years. The 88-bed inpatient facility is located away from major population centers which presented problems for the hospital as it competed with much larger and more financially-stable healthcare systems. In 2016, Lehigh Regional Medical Center was acquired by Prime Healthcare and immediately recruited Gary Bell to be the hospital’s CEO. Under their combined vision the medical center has emerged as a cherished and trusted healthcare facility throughout the Lehigh Acres Community. Today, LRMC proudly serves the needs of individuals located across five counties.
