Critical Care Services (ICU & PCU):
Progressive Care Unit (PCU): Progressive care defines the care that is delivered to patients whose needs fall along the less acute end of that continuum. Progressive care patients are moderately stable with less complexity, require moderate resources and require intermittent nursing vigilance or are stable with a high potential for becoming unstable and require increased intensity of care and vigilance.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU): Intensive care is advanced and highly specialized care provided to medical or surgical patients whose conditions are life threatening and require comprehensive care and constant monitoring.
Visiting hours are as follows:
10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.
2:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
5:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
8:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
If you need to stay beyond 8 p.m. because of your loved one's condition, you must get a visitor's badge from the House Supervisor. The badge is required for both visitor and staff safety.
Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult in the intensive care unit and in waiting rooms. Please supervise your children at all times.
Arranging a visit: Please call into the progressive care unit from the front desk or the red visitor phone located in the ICU/PCU waiting room to make sure it is a good time to visit. this helps preserve the privacy of our patients.
Who can visit: Immediate family members and significant others may visit in the intensive care unit. However, we understand that on occcassion a good friend may be as important to the patient and will be allowed to visit. Sometimes the patient/family may want to restrict visits during the first few days of hospitalization. Please let us know if this is the case.
Can children visit? Only children 14 and over should visit; Because it can be frightening for small children to see a loved one in the progressive care unit, we must prepare them in advance. We give them counseling and age-appropriate information before and after a visit to the progressive care unit. Children must be accompanied by an adult in the progressive care unit and in waiting rooms. Please supervise your children at all times. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted to visit patients in any unit (in the ICU children must be 14 years or older to visit patients).
Number of visitors: Two family members may visit at a time, depending on the patient's condition. Please respect the nurse's judgement, but feel free to discuss with him or her if this poses a problem for the family.
Length of visit: The bedside nurse will decide the length of the visit, based on your loved one's condition. Mou may be asked to leave the room for patient rest, doctor visits, nursing shift changes, test and other procedures that require privacy and confidentiality. You may also be asked to leave if an urgent situation arises with another patient on the unit.
How to get information on a patient: the bedside nurse is the best source of information about the patient. Your family spekesperson can call the intensive care unit desk for information on the condition of your loved one. Please do not give the identification number given to you to anyone else. no information will be given out over the phone to anyone but immediate family members.
Gifts: Small, non-breakable, low-value gifts are best.
No: Food, fresh flowers or plants.
Yes: Silk flowers, small balloons (NOT latex), pictures and cards.
Please remember there isn't much space in the intensive care unit for personal items.
Waiting rooms: Waiting rooms are available so families and friends can take a break from a visit or wait nearby. Please limit the size of groups using the waiting lounges for the comfort of everyone using them. The waiting rooms have a phone to call the ICU/PCU desk: and helpful information about the hospital.
A few rules apply:
* No cell phones or laptop computers are permitted in patient rooms. They can interfere with
equipment. Howver, they can be used in waiting rooms.

Pain Management:
You have a right to relief from pain. There are a variety of ways to control pain. Pain medicine helps to decrease pain by blocking pain messages to your brain. Other approaches to pain relief include applying hot or cold treatments or listening to music. The goal is to reduce your pain as much as possible.
All patients are unique and need their own pain control plan. The best way to control pain is to begin pain relief treatment before the pain becomes severe. Continue pain medication on a consistent regular basis to break the pain cycle.
